Mattress recycling is still in its infancy, so in all likelihood your old mattress will end up in a landfill. There are many local restrictions on selling and giving away used mattresses, and with the advent of bedbugs getting a used mattress from a stranger is a dubious proposition. However, if you happen to live in one of the cities below, you might be in luck.

California (northern), multiple locations: St. Vincent de Paul

Minnesota, Minneapolis: Second Chance Recycling

Oregon, Lane County, multiple locationsSt. Vincent de Paul

South Carolina, Pamplico: Nine Lives Mattress Recycling

Washington and Oregon: SleepCountry USA

Don’t be fooled into thinking you have to constantly replace your mattress; do so only when it’s causing you discomfort. Also, don’t forget that simply rotating your mattress every few months can make it last much longer.
